The Biotechnology Department at P.S.R. Engineering College was established in 2002 and offers a B.Tech program in Biotechnology. With an intake capacity of 30 students, the department received NBA accreditation for the period from 2023 to 2027.Recognized as a Research Center by Anna University, it provides M.S (By Research) and Ph.D programs in Biotechnology. The department boasts specialized faculty in Microbial Technology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Bioprocess and Chemical Engineering, Nanobiotechnology, and Computational Biology. Program verticals encompass Bioprocess Technology, Biosciences, Medical Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Computational Biology, Agro Biotechnology, Quality and Regulatory Affairs. The department is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, valued at over 3 crores, housing advanced equipment like Fermentors, Gel Documentation systems, UV Visible Spectrophotometers, Spectrofluorometers, HPLC, Fluorescence Microscopes, ELISA Readers, Western blotting apparatus, Lyophilizers, CO2 incubators, Gas Chromatographs, and PCR machines. These facilities align with global standards of esteemed institutions. Focused on academic prowess, the department prioritizes a conducive learning atmosphere and promotes research and extension activities. Research areas include Bioremediation Techniques, Fluid Flow Dynamics in Biological Systems, Biomechanics, Carbon Capture, and Food Processing. Engagement initiatives for students encompass technical associations, guest lectures, workshops, industrial visits, project internships, seminars, conferences, and competitions. Professional associations such as the Society of Biological Chemists (SBI), Microbiological Society of India (MBI), Antiviral Research Society (AVRS), Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE), and Institute Innovation Council (IIC) offer value-added courses and industrial certification programs, enhancing students’ skills and employability. Students undergo industrial training in modern simulation tools applicable to all bioprocess systems. Outstanding student performance has led to placements in renowned industries like Zifo R&D Solutions, Reliance Biotech, Biocon, and GE Healthcare.
